It's Springtime in camarillo, and I'm sharing some of my favorite April Ingredients, all photographed at the Saturday Camarillo farmers market...
Starting with the prettiest of greens + fresh herbs, the arugula in Springtime is still delicate and spicy, mint and other soft herbs are gorgeous, and the mustards, dandelion and assorted lettuces are available to add balance to your citrus salads.
Quintessential Spring ingredients like asparagus, super sweet carrots, artichokes and fava beans are readily available and a welcome sign of the end of Winter root veggies. They also let us know that cherries and stone fruit are just around the corner - Murray Family Farms has a projected arrival date of April 17th for their first cherries!
Sweet Spring strawberries tied us over until stone fruit season arrives, and warmer weather and longer days means the chickens, ducks, geese and other feathered friends are starting to lay more eggs.
Available at most farmer's markets now, and from excellent larger organic growers in California, I am loving all the sprouts and the unique flavor and crunch they add to dishes. Radish and onion sprouts top my list!
Last but not least, here is an item that didn't come out of the ground in Spring, but is still available... everyone's favorite anti-inflammatory ingredient, turmeric!
